Everything You Need To Know About Moving With, Choosing, and Using Plastic Storage Bins

Jul 31, 2023

Why should you use and how can you pack plastic storage bins? As you prepare to move, take a look at what you need to know about choosing and using plastic storage pins to pack.

What Are Storage Bins?

Don't let the name fool you. Even though plastic bins are commonly referred to as storage bins or storage containers, you don't have to store anything in these sturdy boxes. Bins are able to be useful as moving bins as well.

Storage bins are made from a rigid type of plastic that doesn't allow water into the container. Some bins, depending on the material makeup, can also keep the sun, air, or heat out.

Along with the bottom part of the container, these bins also have a lid. The lid should fit tightly onto the bin. It may snap shut or have latches on the side to hold the top and bottom of the bin together. This helps to keep the elements out of the bin and away from your belongings.

Are All Storage Bins the Same?

No, all bins are not the same. Plastic storage bins all share some of the same characteristics. These include the plastic material they’re made from, the overall shape, and the top and bottom (base and lid) design. But this is where the similarities end. The most common differences between bins include:

  • The color. Storage bins are available in a variety of color choices or with clear sides. You can use different hues of bins to organize your move with a color coding system. Clear bins allow you to easily see what is inside, while opaque bins protect light-sensitive items.
  • The size. As with color, bins are available in an array of different sizes. Pack larger items in oversized bins. Use smaller bins for dishware, books, or children's toys.
  • The quality. Bins also vary in quality. Instead of choosing the cheapest bins for sale, select high-quality containers that you can use now and reuse for years after your move.

Plastic bins are also available in designer patterns and stylish designs. If you plan to reuse the bin as in-home storage—for example, as a child's toy chest—you may want to select a decorative option.

How Should You Use Plastic Storage Bins To Move?

After choosing plastic bins, it's time to take the next step and pack for your move. Leave yourself plenty of time or gradually pack in increments. If you plan to pack during the months or weeks before your move, start with items that you rarely use or that are out of season—such as Christmas decorations during a July move or water toys during a mid-winter move.

To organize everything for the move and pack your haul efficiently and effectively:

  • Don't overload the bins. Even though the plastic material is sturdy, it can't hold everything. Not only could a heavy item crack the bin, but it could also make the container almost impossible for the mover to lift and carry.
  • Use towels or bubble wrap for protection. Stop items from shifting and spilling inside the bins with a few sheets of protective padding. Roll towels or use bubble wrap to create cushions on the sides and at the top of each bin.
  • Label the bins. Use sticker labels and permanent markers to write what is inside. If you choose clear bins, you may not need this type of label.

As you pack for your move, think about what you won't need right away or might store. Add the words "for storage" to the container's label and either contract the mover to bring the bins to your self-storage unit if you’ve rented one or choose a space in your new home to store the items.
